Mt Nicholas Heli Hiking

In conjunction with Mt Nicholas Station, we are able to offer a variety of Heli Hiking options on a privately owned, High Country Station.

This 100,000 acre property lies at the foot of the Southern Alps with Fiordland National Park to the west and the sparkling clear waters of Lake Wakatipu to the East.

The terrain at Mt Nicholas rises from lake level at 300 metres, to over 2,000 metres and includes a stunning landscape of river valleys & flats, spectacular mountains, and native bush, giving way to alpine grasses and craggy bluffs.
If tranquillity & privacy is important, then this is an experience, not to be missed.

Gilbert Valley

On your approach to Mt Nicholas from the east, you will round the base of the Thompson Mountains & the grandeur of the Gilbert Valley unfold before you. Stands of native beech trees contrast with the richness of native grass slopes, shingle scree’s & rocky peaks.

Nestled in the beech forest is the recently restored, original beech wood slab Gilbert Muster’s Hut which was first built nearly 100 years ago.

The track from the hut down the valley meanders through beech forest, sundrenched alpine clearings & an ever increasing view of the diverse lakeside slopes below. The view across the rugged Gilbert Gorge takes in the slopes of the Kanada Arm & above it the Kanada Saddle which leads into the North Von Valley. This is home to both red & fallow deer which can often be seen grazing on the lush slopes.

As the valley opens out, the sparkling clear waters of Lake Wakatipu come into view, framed by the surrounding mountains, this panoramic picture provides a sense of idyllic peace & restfulness.

The final part of your journey takes you through stands of native manuka & mataguari which provide valuable shelter for livestock & as you cross the final bridge, you will gaze into the crystal clear waters of the Von River which began its journey to the lake, high up in the surrounding mountains.
